Restoration is the art of returning an item to its original condition. Years of wear, abuse and neglect
can be carefully removed and the item returned to its former glory.
Restoration is an art because in addition to woodworking skill, it requires knowledge of turn-of-the-century
construction, veneering techniques, the aging process for furniture, and the methods used to make new work
blend seamlessly with original sections.
Where possible, Eugene uses salvaged or vintage wood from period pieces, matched for colour,
grain, wear, etc. Hardware is carefully selected to match the items original pieces. Careful attention is
paid to ensuring that the finish is uniform throughout the piece. Woods can be aged or distressed as
required to match the original sections of a piece or the entire item can be refinished to provide a fresh
appearance.
Below are just a few fine examples of restorations Eugene has completed. Please browse these
examples and then contact Eugene to discuss your special item.
That old piece of furniture you have tucked away in your attic could be a family heirloom waiting for
restoration!

Veneered Table
- This table arrived after many years of storage in a damp location. The veneered top was ruined and the veneers
in many other areas were bubbled, cracked or missing.
- In order to restore it, all the veneers were removed and the table was corrected structurally.
The laborious process of applying veneers to all the surfaces of the table began. A special burled veneer
was found to provide a striking centerpiece, and the top was finished with the veneers laid in 16 separate, triangular
sections, to provide a striking and one-of-a-kind table top.
- As a finishing touch, a number of layers of hand-applied polyurethane were applied and carefully sanded
to bring out the woods true beauty.

Rolltop Desk
- This antique rolltop desk was a special project. It arrived in a number of pieces,
and it was discovered that quite a few were missing. The owners had a badly damaged
matching dresser that they supplied as a source of wood for the repairs.
- Eugene studied the remaining parts of the desk and was able to create the needed
pieces to make it whole again. The secret compartments and special drawers in the
secretary portion were discovered and restored to working order, a new tambour (rolltop)
and other pieces were created from the salvaged wood.
- After a thorough stripping and sanding, the desk was rebuilt, using old and new pieces.
The desk was then restored with a special finish treatment to recreate its antique look.
- The result, a true heirloom to be treasured.

Occasional Table
- This table was restored from a small pile of parts (see photo) delivered to Goods of Wood.
Both shelves of the table had split apart and the joints were loose. One of the brass feet was missing,
but Eugene was able to supply one that was an exact match to the originals.
- The table was completely disassembled, the old finish removed, the parts were reassembled and refinished
to create a beautiful, "like-new" occasional table.

Dresser
- This dresser arrived in very bad condition. One drawer was missing, the mirror had scaled,
the finish was bubbled and worn, veneer had cracked and was missing on some panels,
and only one drawer handle remained.
- The dresser was completely dissassembled, new parts were fashioned from salvaged wood
that matched in grain and colour, the missing drawer was constructed using half-blind dovetails
to match the originals, the mirror was resilvered and the dresser was reassembled.
- The dresser was then stained and treated with hand-applied polyurethane
to reveal the warmth of the woodgrain and restore a deep, lustrous finish. Hardware that
matched the original piece was then installed for the finishing touch.
- The pictures speak for themselves.

Rocking Chair
- This rocker arrived missing one rocker and with cracks in the other. The upholstery
was badly worn and the whole chair was loose and wobbly.
- A new rocker was fashioned using the original as a pattern. The chair was disassembled,
the old finish removed and reconstructed with the new parts. The upholstery was stripped down
to the frame and completely redone to provide a soft, luxurios seat and back, covered in new material.
- A deep, rich mahogany stain was applied, followed by protective polyurethane, resulting in a
beautiful new piece of furniture.
